Troubleshooting Streaming Media

Some users experience problems when trying to streaming media. Here is some information that may help you troubleshoot your connection problems.

  • Is your computer set to accept cookies?
The Windows Media player requires that your browser accept third-party cookies in order to start the stream. Some users have reported that the player opens but displays "connecting" and does not start to stream. After they adjusted their browser settings to accept cookies they were able to connect. For Internet Explorer 6.0, you can set the Privacy tab to "Medium High" to protect yourself from malicious cookies. If you have a third-party program that blocks cookies, try disabling it temporarily before launching the Windows Media player.

  • Your virus protection program may have a firewall.
It is also possible a virus program such as Norton Utilities could act as a local firewall; therefore you may need to configure as follows...
-First, open the Windows Media Player
    -Click on the "Tools" menu
-On the "options" selection, select "advanced"
-Double click where it says "Streaming Media (Windows Media)"
-On this page, under "Protocols" uncheck every box except... "HTTP" and "Use browser settings"
Click "ok", close the player, and open it again

  • Your agency may have to open ports to allow streaming on their server.
